Spring...

Redbud, wild plum, verbena, and dogwood shout “spring” to the whole world.  Before they make their appearance, however, spring slips in quietly with a warm day or two.  Winter pushes back with a cold one.  Then spring comes back with more and more warm days.  The grass greens and leaf buds swell.  Puffs of “smoke” make large cedar trees appear to be on fire in early March, but it is just copious quantities of cedar pollen swirled by spring breezes.  Tiny purple cowslips are the first blossoms, followed by spring beauties, violets and buttercups.  Bright yellow jonquils bloom in the yards of most homes and also in unexpected places.  Jonquils are often survivors marking home sites that existed in the early 1900’s when forty and sixty-acre farms were the norm.
Spring isn’t just wildflowers, however.  Spring is a time of baby calves and other baby farm animals, deer and other wildlife.  Spring is fine fishing in the lakes in Ozark County, good mushroom hunting in the woodlands and watercress picking in the spring fed streams.  Spring is a good time to be in Ozark County.
